Sock Puppets in Discovery Time

On Friday in Discovery Time, we had a go at making some sock puppets. Little people's imaginations never cease to amaze me! Using the hot glue gun is always fun too. However, we did very well with only a couple of squarks when fingers touched the glue. I can see us continuing making puppets for a few weeks to come.

LOTS OF KIDS HAD EXCITING NEWS !!

Lots of kids had very exciting news today....

Cobain has made up a poster about his favourite dinosaur/fish, the 'Megalodon'. He had a chart to show how big it was compared to a great white shark! It ate meat, and had gigantic teeth!
Well done Cobain!!, We are proud of you :)

Dane had a little bag of goodies to show us after his visit to the dental nurse. He had a black plastic spider and some pictures of minions.

Mariela brought along her pet Caterpillar. It crawled over her hand and was very fast!

Seth brought along his player of the day trophy from Rugby in the weekend.

We all enjoyed listening to their very exciting news!

School Cross Country !

Today we ran the Cross Country! The weather was fabulous and we were soooooo excited!
First we had to wait a little while under the tent for our race to start. We cheered on the others that were running

Then we had to warm up:

Shortly after our warm up, we were at the start line. Ready, set, GO!!!

We had to run a long way! But we had smiles on our faces and we kept on running! We all finished with style...

THE MINSTREL !!

On Wednesday we had an amazing time watching the show "Hiwi the Kiwi goes fishing" presented by 'The Minstrel'.
Here he is singing some of his songs, with Mrs Minstrel showing us the dance moves!

We had a lot of fun dancing along with Mrs Minstrel :)

We learnt lots of things about looking after fish so future generations will still have fish left to catch. We also learnt how to keep ourselves safe when we are around and on the water.
The most interesting fact the children have remembered really well is:
'If you catch a big mummy fish, make sure you put her gently back in the water, because she may have babies in her tummy'!

Poet in Residence!

What a coup! Matarau School welcomed poet, Paula Green to school yesterday. Over the course of the day, Paula held sessions for the whole school in the library. Even the newest of newbies!! She read quite a few poems to us from her latest collection 'Letterbox Cat' (which has been nominated for Children's Choice at the NZ Post Book Awards!!) and showed us how much fun it is creating poems. When we went back to the classroom, we created a poem together;
