Pammy Princess
We were lucky enough to have Pammy Princess spend the afternoon with us today. After she read us a story, we showed her how awesome we are in the pool! Thanks for coming, Pammy.

Maths - comparing
Today we were comparing ourselves - eye colour and height. We discovered the majority of Room 2 children have brown eyes and green was the least common colour. Have a look at the graph we created next time you come into the classroom.
Next - we tried to put ourselves in order from the shortest to the tallest. Do you think we succeeded??

Welcome back everyone after a lovely long weekend. It was great to hear that so many of you did exciting things.
Wow - we certainly hit the ground running today. We started our full writing programme in earnest, with EVERYONE writing something about themselves. We'll be drawing some self portraits over the next few days and these pieces of writing will accompany them. Keep a lookout for those.
We also started instructional reading groups - I was so impressed with how quickly everyone picked up the idea of the 'pointing finger'. We need to make sure we point to every word as we read our story, to help make the connection between the written and spoken word.

Maths Time!
Number knowledge forms about 80% of our maths learning in Year 1. We integrate
Maths knowledge, language and concepts throughout the day whenever the opportunity arises-
* calendar maths to start
each day *taking the roll
*counting characters in a book *learning numbers in Te Reo Maori
You can help at home by encouraging your child to: write numbers correctly, count forwards and backwards, play maths games, read numbers when you're in the car.
We love maths - and the great thing is... IT'S EVERYWHERE!!
Phonics in Room 2
A huge part of our early learning in Rm 2 is the recognition of graphemes (letters) and their associated phoneme (sound). We use Yolanda Soryl's Phonics as the basis of our programme. For the first 14 weeks, we focus on 'Stage 2' to ensure knowledge is embedded. From there, children are extended as needed.
